HI THERE! I’M JOHNATHAN CILONE

Hello everyone! My name is Johnathan Cilone, and I am a second-year graduate student at Appalachian State University. I am interested in the history of popular culture, specifically that of popular music in twentieth century America. Like all cultural forms, music is intrinsically embedded within its political, social, and cultural contexts– it is both a product of its historical moment and an active agent in shaping culture. Rather than existing in isolation, songs, artists, and compositions develop from the specific tensions, trends, technologies, values, and contradictions of their era. Yet music does not merely mirror its environment; it is an active participant in an ongoing cultural conversation. Once released into the world, songs inspire artists and individuals who, in turn, create new works, building upon and reinterpreting the music they have encountered. This dialectic of music fosters the emergence of new genres and styles, illustrating that music is not only a reflection of historical realities but also a catalyst for cultural evolution. I am currently working on a Masters thesis on baroque rock and its intersection with the American counterculture!
